LeXuS Looks Back With NOSTALGIA

I never heard an artist so deeply rooted in Sade’s musical lineage until I heard LeXuS. Her music takes you back to a time when pop icons exuded elegance. This connection to the past anchors LeXuS’ debut mixtape, NOSTALGIA. Her richly layered tone has the mystique and vocal presence of an artist twice her age. The 18 year old singer-songwriter shows great maturity in letting her music slowly build in suspense and intrigue. Elongated intros in “You’re The One”, “Feels So Good” and “Stay With Me” sets the nocturne mood that defines NOSTALGIA. Once LeXuS’ voice finally comes in, it tantalizes in it’s ability to be both present and distant. Due to her mixing choices and mellow approach, LeXuS’ vocals has an ethereal quality. I found myself engrossed in her emotive, yet calculated delivery.
While NOSTALGIA sits firmly in the sensual jazz/soul category, diversions in the house influenced “Let Them Talk” and the experimental “Indigo” reveal an artist who knows her sound, yet has some surprises up her sleeve. The latter is a personal favorite due to it’s abstract quality. In my opinion, LeXuS shines when the lyrics match the complexity of her sound. By the time I finished the impressive nine-track NOSTALGIA, I yearned for songs that went beyond idyllic sexual romance. How does LeXuS feel when the honeymoon is over? Fortunately for us, I have a feeling that question will be answered as LeXuS soars to her vast potential. Twitter Bandcamp
